Warm and cozy, this gluten-free and dairy-free pumpkin spice latte recipe puts a healthy spin on the classic fall drink.
Ahh, the classic #PSL. Who doesn't love a warm pumpkin spice latte in the fall? It's cozy, comforting, and perfectly spiced. Buuut, at your local coffee shop it's probably full of sugar and calories. Not to mention that the classic pumpkin spice syrup often contains sweetened condensed milk - which is not vegan or lactose-friendly.
Insert this healthy pumpkin spice latte recipe! It is gluten-free, dairy-free, refined sugar-free, vegan, and paleo. Now isn't that a mouthful! You might ask - "If this sounds too good to be true, then what IS in this healthy pumpkin spice latte?" That is a mighty fine question. Keep reading to find out just how simple it can be to make the coffee shop classic at home!
There are so many great things about this recipe:
1) It seriously tastes better than from a coffee shop.. you won't miss the dairy and added sugar.
2) You can have a homemade healthy drink in just 3 minutes.
3) You don't have to spend $6 on the drink because you probably already have everything in your pantry.
Ingredients you need to create a healthy pumpkin spice latte at home
Pumpkin purée: Because it's in the name! The best part is, you probably have some pumpkin left over from another baked good these days, so this is the perfect way to use that up!
Maple syrup: Just a tablespoon of this refined sugar-free sweetener gives the pumpkin spice latte the perfect level of sweetness.
Pumpkin pie spice: A small sprinkle of this spicy mixture evokes all the flavours of fall!
Espresso: I love my Nespresso. I have the Vertuo line machine and it is so amazing; I should do a whole post on it. My favourite single espresso pod is Diavolitto, and if I'm feeling really tired, Bianco Leggero is my favourite double espresso. You can choose single or double for this recipe depending on how strong you want it to be.
Non-dairy milk: My favourite milk for frothed drinks is Silk unsweetened vanilla almond milk. For some reason, it's the only almond milk I can get to froth and it foams beautifully. I use my Nespresso Aeroccino to froth, but you could also warm your milk and use a handheld milk frother.
Note: I recommend using a handheld milk frother for this recipe. It blends the "pumpkin sauce" ingredients beautifully with little mess. If you don't have one, you could use a regular whisk as long as it's small. Handheld milk frothers can be found on Amazon for under $20.
Optional - Dairy-free whipped cream and cinnamon sprinkle: If you're feeling extra festive, try adding some coconut whipped cream, a sprinkle of cinnamon, and a fresh cinnamon stick to your drink!
How to make a pumpkin spice latte in just 3 minutes
What's great about this healthy homemade PSL is that you can have it in just 3 minutes, and it won't cost you $6. Here's how to make it:
Begin by adding your pumpkin purée, maple syrup, pumpkin pie spice, and a dash of milk to your mug. Whisk together with a handheld milk frother or a small whisk.
Next, brew your espresso. You can even brew it directly into the mug. While that's happening, froth your non-dairy milk. I like to use my Nespresso Aeroccino machine, but you could also heat and whisk the milk.
With the espresso in the mug, give it a quick whisk to incorporate with the pumpkin sauce. Then add in the milk and foam.
There are so many options for toppings. You could leave it as is, add a sprinkle of cinnamon, or even top with coconut whipped cream! Then it's time for you to enjoy!
This healthy pumpkin spice latte is perfect for a cozy fall day! Gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan, and paleo - everyone can enjoy this delicious drink regardless of dietary restrictions.
